The African slaves first introduced the banjo to the US, they used gourds and strings to make an
instrument that was like the ones that they grew up with in their own countries. These first instruments were
called gourd banjos.
Today's banjos are classified as being either four string, five string, or six
string and these are further subdivided into those which have or do not have a detachable back or resonator. These
are called resonator banjos or open back banjos. The ukulele is a hybrid form of the banjo. The beginner can find a
very reasonably price banjo but the professional will spend much more. Used ones may be found here. Banjos can
be played by a strumming method like playing a
guitar. The left hand holds down several frets on the neck thus forming a chord, while the right hand brushes
across the strings on the banjo's bridge in this method. The other method is by holding down individual
strings with the left hand and picking out that string with the right hand, this method is arpeggio or Spanish
guitar style. Whatever method is used, it is a convention of the instrument to play it very
quickly.
After purchasing your banjo you need to take certain steps to take care of your
instrument. First is wash your hands and trim your nails before playing it. Long nails can easily damage the
fingerboard. Next always wipe down the banjo with a lightly dampened cloth after you are finished. Make sure all
fingerprints and other marks are removed and the instrument is thoroughly air dried before you put it in it's case.
Always be careful if it is a five string banjo when you put it in the case, because of the fifth peg. It is highly
recommended to store the banjo in a hard case and remove the capo if you are not planning to play the instrument
for awhile as otherwise tarnishing of the wood can occur. Every few months you should polish both the wood and
metal surfaces using a proprietary cleaner and rub oil into the wood with a clean soft cloth. With proper care your
banjo will be in excellent shape for many years.
